Job Description

Job Summary: Lab Intern
Reporting to the Technical Director as part of the Technical Direction and Process Validation team, the individual will be stationed in the Norfolk Laboratory. The lab’s primary goal is to develop and generate treatment solutions for natural surface water and industrial wastewater applications. The Lab Intern’s responsibilities will include performing routine laboratory analyses on water and industrial wastewater samples and assisting research chemists with treatability studies and benchtop simulations in accordance with the site’s ISO quality expectations and best practices. The Lab Intern also assists in performing ion exchange resin testing of Veolia’s Global Service Centers to support fleet monitoring and identify maintenance needs when required.


Tasks and Responsibilities: Tier 0 Lab Intern (Guideline: Junior level or higher in college)

  • Performs basic wet chemistry test methods for water analysis (i.e. meters, titrations, chloride, silica, Hach tests).
  • Performs daily analytical instrument calibrations.
  • Conducts ion exchange testing (conditioning, capacity, moisture, physical analysis).
  • Assists researchers with treatability studies and other projects.
  • Responsible for helping to maintain the lab’s housekeeping.
  • Participates in chemical inventory and sweeps.
  • Develops expertise in components of balanced water analysis.
  • Adheres to all company EHS requirements and procedures.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of basic chemistry and water analysis parameters.
  • Knowledge of basic laboratory techniques and equipment: titration, pipettes, graduated cylinders, beakers and flasks, and other basic lab equipment.
  • Knowledge of basic computer skills (word processing, spreadsheets, e-mail).
  • Data interpretation, record keeping, reporting, and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to properly execute any test methods assigned.
  • Ability to read and follow methods for test procedures, reports, and QC.
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate orally in English in a fluent manner.
  • Demonstrates good writing skills.


Education & Experience

  • Chemistry major or minor in conjunction with other science field is preferred.
  • Minimum two full years in college completed in addition to two years of chemistry labs.
  • Ability to work independently in a lab environment with other team members.
  • Demonstrated dedication to lab safety.
  • Self-motivated and a team player.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills.
  • Able to communicate the written word effectively.
