Job Description
Position Purpose:
To catalyze community workforce development efforts and to help candidates succeed as a Wastewater Operator. The Operator in training (OIT) will receive training and develop skills that are necessary for a career as a Wastewater Operator. Skills will be developed and experience will be gained through a combination of classroom training, online training, and on the job training. Upon completion of the program, the OIT will obtain a Wisconsin Wastewater Operator certification, as well as hands-on experience working directly with Operators.
As these skills will be obtained through hands on experience at Jones Island WRF, South Shore WRF, and the Collection System, candidates will be exposed to dirt, dust, extremes in temperature and humidity, odors, heights, confined spaces, gases, raw sewage, and other hazardous materials.
Primary Duties/Responsibilities:
- Receive all applicable safety training (including but not limited to OSHA 10, Lockout-Tagout, Confined Space Entry, Working at Heights and Aerial Lift Training, and Use of Powered Industrial Trucks) and will be Required to follow all applicable safety rules, regulations, policies, and procedures in performance of assigned duties.
- Learn to utilize Job Safety Analyses and Mental Safety Assessments to identify and mitigate jobsite hazards to ensure the safe completion of all assigned job tasks.
- Develop skills utilizing computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS), data management programs and SCADA systems.
- Interpret and read technical communications and documentation to understand system boundaries (i.e. necessary for Lockout-Tagout) and functionality.
- Learn to properly identify equipment and machinery malfunctions through troubleshooting.
- Gain experience in Wastewater Operations.
- Daily Operator Rounds.
- Sample collection, lab analysis and documentation.
- Process control strategies and implementation.
- Mechanical, Biological, and Chemical treatment of wastewater streams.
Qualifications
Education/Experience/Background:
- High School Diploma/GED is required.
- Experience with basic machinery and hand tools is a plus.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- A willingness to learn and an interest in a career in wastewater.
- Ability to use computers and mobile devices to send and receive data.
- Ability to meet the physical demands of the job.
- Effective communicator and active listener.
- Strong attention and unwavering commitment to safety.
