POSITION PURPOSE: Under general supervision, operates and maintains high pressure boilers, water treatment system, air compressors, and other related equipment. Performs the work in the operation, preventative, corrective maintenance, and modification to of various electrical/electronic controls, transmitters, flow meters, data acquisition system, process control systems, boilers and related equipment, fuel systems, compressed air systems, building maintenance, and other related fixed and portable equipment. Performs minor construction, and equipment installation in a facility that produces steam, process water and compressed air for a third party client.
PRIMARY DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Performs preventive maintenance on a variety of equipment according to established procedures; inspects, calibrates, adjusts, lubricates, and repairs or replaces components. Services and repairs the more complex equipment; assists in documenting and maintaining equipment operations logs, and preventive maintenance and repair on equipment.
- Operates high pressure boilers, fuel, steam, water, and compressed air systems in the highest achievable state of efficiencies in a safe and reliable manner with minimum supervision.
- Diagnoses system malfunctions on a variety of mechanical, pneumatic, and/or electrical equipment. Dismantles and repairs or replaces defective parts, reassembles, tests, and reinstalls repaired equipment.
- Responds to calls for emergency repairs; completes repairs and documents services rendered.
- Performs all work in a safe and responsible manner that meets or exceeds OSHA regulations and the established policies and procedures within the facility.
- Performs and documents scheduled inspections and operational safety tests necessary to maintain conformance to code requirements.
- Performs and documents equipment repairs, and tests new and repaired equipment before it is put into service.
- May order supplies and parts according to established procedures.
- Maintains records in compliance with state and company requirements.
- Assist management in developing and maintaining startup, normal, and emergency operating procedures.
- Assist management in developing and adhering to annual budgets.
- Assist management in developing capital requests.
- Establishes and maintains courteous, cooperative relations when interacting with the customer and other company personnel.
- Performs other related duties as required.
- Follow directions of the Operations Supervisor and assignments of the chief operator/mechanic.
- Must follow established operational, process control, safety and emergency response procedures. Must adhere to specifications and production schedule.
- Frequent contact with plant operators and other personnel in order to understand issues.
- Assists in other areas of plant as needed. May assist with orienting or training new or less experienced Operators.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS / WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work Environment: Spends 100% of the time in operations environment. May need to work outside in inclement weather conditions and occasionally drive vehicle to perform duties.
Possible Work Hazards: May be exposed to possible operations hazards including fumes, toxic and caustic chemicals, heavy machinery, high pressure and temperature, hot or cold work environment temperatures, slippery surfaces, water hazards and electrical equipment.
Physical Demands: Amount of time spent – Standing 25%, Walking 75% for as many as five miles per shift. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, or crouch and enter confined spaces. May be required to use ladders or stairs.
Education / Experience / Background
- High School education or equivalent with the ability to read, write and comprehend English (operational, process, safety and quality instructions).
- Trade/technical/vocational area training strongly preferred.
- Over five years’ experience in a related position and environment with knowledge of the methods, techniques, and practices of steam plant operations.
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities
- Must have the ability to perform basic math equations.
- Must demonstrate proficiency in the care and use of all site specific, facility required PPE (Personal Protection Equipment), including respirators, gas detectors, confined space equipment, etc.).
- Must consistently demonstrate the ability to operate all machines and equipment meeting or exceeding processing and quality targets under general supervision.
- Must demonstrate ability to efficiently operate all equipment in the facility which may include pumps, including pumps, motors, deaerators, valves, water softeners, heat exchangers, blowers, chemical feed and other controls and filters used to operate a natural gas steam plant.
- Must have the ability to diagnose process problems regardless of complexity, troubleshoot equipment and take corrective action within policy and procedure limitations.
- Must demonstrate a working ability to use computer programs for process control.
- Must demonstrate ability to work in a team environment and willingness to assume additional or new responsibilities readily.
- Must be able to serve rotational 24 hour emergency on-call if required by site.
- Must be able to lift weights up to 100 pounds and carry equipment.
- Must be comfortable working around hazardous and disagreeable environmental conditions, including dirt, noise, heights, and confined spaces
Required Certification / Licenses / Training
- Typically holds a boiler operator’s license or equivalent power plant experience.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and a safe driving record.
